Safer driving starts with how drivers think

Skill alone doesn't make a safer driver
Most crash risk comes from routine choices, not a lack of car control. Where drivers look, how close they follow, how fast they go and how tired or distracted they are all play a part. Australian research has also found that training focused mainly on vehicle handling can raise confidence without reducing risk. Murcotts created BAAMS® to close that gap by developing the thinking behind the driving as well as the skill.
16%
of serious casualty crashes resulting in hospital attendance in Australia are associated with distracted driving
4.5×
the crash risk for drivers who've had only 4–5 hours' sleep in the past 24, compared with 7 hours or more
2×
In a 60 km/h zone, the risk of being involved in a fatal crash doubles with every 5 km/h over the limit

Five elements. One complete driver.
Every driver has a profile that reflects their personal characteristics. BAAMS® brings those characteristics together into the five human elements that underpin a driver safety culture.

Behaviour
What drivers actually do, especially under pressure.
Attitude
How they view risk, road rules and other road users.
Awareness
How well they read themselves, the road and changing hazards.
Motivation
Why they choose one behaviour over another.
Skills
The ability to turn good decisions into safe vehicle control.
How it's used
Participants complete their BAAMS® Driver Profile as part of Murcotts training and explore it with their trainer. The practical exercises that follow make it personal, linking how each driver thinks to how they drive.
What drivers gain
- A clear picture of their own habits and blind spots
- Practical skills with the reasons behind them
- Personal commitments they can take back to work
What organisations gain
- A shared language for the human side of driving risk
- Earlier visibility of higher-risk attitudes and habits
- Training that connects to your fleet-risk and WHS controls
Built on experience. Proven in the field.
Our own framework
BAAMS® draws on more than 50 years of Murcotts driver-safety experience. It's a defined model, not a buzzword.
Trusted by government
Murcotts has been the principal driver training provider to a federal government fleet for more than 20 years, and works with transport and government agencies across Australia.
Practical training with a purpose
Our braking, steering and vehicle-dynamics exercises show drivers their stopping distances, the limits of grip and how quickly options disappear. They build margin, not bravado.
Look Up. Stay Back.®
Our two signature behaviours target observation and following distance, the habits most closely linked to everyday crash risk.
One partner, every vehicle
From defensive driving and driver coaching to 4WD, trailer towing, reversing, buses and security driving. BAAMS® gives all of it a common thread.
Part of your safety system
We connect training to your wider fleet-risk and WHS controls, whether that's one session or a national program.
