Welcome to MURCOTTS

The Legacy of Jim Murcott, a Pioneer in Driver Safety.

Murcotts was founded in 1969 by Jim Murcotts, a pioneer of advanced and defensive driver training in Australia. Remembered for Jim Murcott's Advanced Driving Centre, he set the benchmark for driver safety education. Jim passed away in 2001, but his influence on how Australians drive and think about safety endures.

More than five decades on, Murcotts continues to build on Jim Murcott's pioneering work. His belief that safer drivers come from better knowledge, skills and attitudes remains central to every program. His legacy lives on in the thousands of drivers we train and the impact we have on road safety across Australia.

Our Approach

The Murcotts Defensive Driving Approach

Our training is built on behavioural science, not just vehicle handling. We focus on the decisions drivers make before risk arises — hazard perception, self-awareness, and consistent good habits — so the results last well beyond the training day.

Why Our Approach Works

Safer driving doesn't come from experience alone. Everyday driving reinforces habits — good and bad — and even highly experienced drivers are involved in crashes. Research shows that structured, experiential learning is the most effective way to improve driver safety, which is why Murcotts' programs are built around hands-on, behaviour-focused training.

We apply proven adult-learning principles to shift attitudes, challenge assumptions and build lasting habits. Many drivers believe they are 'above average' and attribute incidents to external factors. Our programs help participants recognise their own patterns first — because insight is the foundation for meaningful change.

What Our Training Achieves

Our programs are designed to deliver measurable improvements in:

  • ✓Awareness of personal driving habits and risky behaviours
  • ✓Hazard perception, risk assessment and risk management
  • ✓Reduction in risk-taking behaviours
  • ✓Defensive and protective driving skills
  • ✓Environmental, safety and economic benefits through smarter driving
  • ✓Maintaining a safe vehicle environment
  • ✓Competence in essential vehicle control

These outcomes are grounded in global road-safety research, collision data, behavioural safety systems and decades of Murcotts' program results.

Methodology

A Methodology That Changes Behaviour

Murcotts' training blends practical driving with the psychological factors that shape real-world behaviour. Our proprietary BAAMS® methodology - Behaviour, Attitude, Awareness, Motivation and Skill - gives participants a clear picture of the human elements that influence their performance behind the wheel. This approach aligns with WorkSafe guidance that effective training must include practical exercises, not just information.

Participants learn through hands-on driving, guided in-car coaching, group reflection, targeted theory on systems such as ABS and ESP, fatigue and environmental impact training, and specialist content for off-road and four-wheel-drive environments.

The result is a program that build confidence, capability and safer decision-making long after the course is complete.

Our Team

Murcotts' training capability is underpinned by a nationally recognised team of instructors and assessors with extensive experience across government, law enforcement, emergency services, coprorate fleets and specialist security operations.

Our trainers hold a range of nationally recognised qualifications relevant to driver training, assessment and operational driving. These include instructional, vocational education and specialist driving credentials, supported by advanced operational training gained in Australia and overseas.
